This book deals with the practical problems of reducing waste in a unique community. In 1990, Canada's Green Plan identified specific environmental objectives for our parks. One of these is a 50 percent reduction of waste by the year 2000. The goal is that all federal operations will be models of responsible environmental achievement at this time. This initiative fostered the opportunity to do an in-depth study of the waste issues in Jasper National Park. The study approaches the problem by reviewing past management practices in the park, analyzing park waste streams, and offering several management options for the future.
First, we needed to determine the nature of park waste streams before solutions were implemented. Much of the book concerns the methodology determining how much waste is generated in the park, who creates it, and what it consists of. We found that Jasper is quite different from other small communities across Canada and certainly different from major urban centres. The results of the study enabled the park to act decisively in establishing waste minimization programs.
The book reaffirms the need for each community to define its own waste composition and to review the effectiveness of its current waste management practices. The study can be used as a tool for other communities to determine their own waste stream, while at the same time providing detailed information on waste from a world-class national park. It will be particularly effective for other resort communities.
